Interview with Anuradha Palnitkar, Author of Around the World with Vegetarian Sandwiches and Wraps...continued

4) What did you enjoy most about writing your book? What did you enjoy least?

Making (and eating!) all the different sandwiches was the most enjoyable part of the needed research for the book. Since I frequently prepare foods for my own family spontaneously without measuring every item, I would say that writing the recipes with the specific amount for each ingredient was time consuming and tiring.

5) Your publisher told me that you had a huge sandwich preparation marathon for the photography shoot for your book. Did you enjoy preparing 40 types of sandwiches in 3 days? Who got to munch up all these tasty treats? What surprised you about the photography process?

Oh, yes, of course, I like cooking and I can do it any time of the day! Making 40 sandwiches in three days was exciting as well as challenging but I managed to do it with the help of my friends and my wonderful publisher who took charge of all the garnishing. All the people who helped me with the preparation got to eat and critique the sandwiches.

As far as the photography is concerned I thought the photographer would be carrying severalcameras with different accessories and that she would require a lot of background props and special lighting. But the process was so simple! Our photographer, Treysi Kaehler, just grabbed her camera and a white linen sheet and snapped the photos. I was very surprised to find that she can delete and add anything which is required to enhance the photos, although she told me there is no substitute for fresh ingredients. In every case, the photo was shot right after the food was prepared.

6) Could you explain and differentiate the types of vegetarianism to our readers (listeners)?

There are different types of vegetarians around the world.

• Lacto/Ovo vegetarian – These are people who eat animal products like milk and eggs but don’t eat animal meat.

• Lacto vegetarian – People who eat milk products but no eggs.

• Ovo vegetarian – People who eat eggs but no milk or milk products.

• Vegan – People who don’t eat anything that comes from animals including products such as milk and milk products, honey and eggs.
